Most of the time business user wants to generate a excel sheet out of a List for huge data.
Yes you can increase the threshold limit from the Central Admin but this is not advisable as the performance takes a hit when you make this change.
This is due to the threshold limit set to 5000 in the Central Admin. SharePoint allows you to store millions of item in SharePoint List but when it comes to viewing those items you cannot view more than 5000 items.
